A highly compelling find for variant hunters and Beatles specialists, this circa 1980 UK pressing of 1962-1966 (The Red Album) stands out as a fascinating mixed-master hybrid compilation under catalogue number PCSP 717. Acting as the ultimate anthology of the Liverpool band's legendary early era, this double LP set features 26 revolutionary recordings that permanently transformed the global pop landscape. The track listing spans their initial studio breakthroughs, capturing the magic of seminal tracks like "Love Me Do", "Please Please Me", "She Loves You", "A Hard Day's Night", and "Yesterday".

The real intrigue of this specific archive copy lies within its transitional dead wax characteristics, showcasing a distinct factory crossover as EMI shifted manufacturing methods between decades. The runout matrices form a unique mixed-matrix layout: -6/-5/-3/-1. Sides A and B feature early 1980s recuts stamped YEX 905-6-1-1 and YEX 906-5 5 :, both proudly bearing the hand-etched "HTM" signature of legendary master cutter Harry Moss. Conversely, sides C and D utilise earlier 1970s plates stamped YEX 907-3 2 GDA and YEX 908-1 5 GRD, retaining the classic British letter-stamping system. This unusual hybrid pressing is paired with standard Apple labels and the round-cornered variant of the red lyric inner inserts.

The package is completed by an unlaminated gatefold picture sleeve manufactured by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd., featuring the correct interior production credit for George Martin. This unlaminated jacket style marks the definitive early 1980s window when laminated finishes were retired by the printers, making this mixed-era assembly a crucial historical document for completionists tracking factory anomalies.

In terms of condition, both vinyl records grade as Very Good (VG); they remain very clean, though Side 1 displays a visible surface scratch across the opening pair of tracks that does not affect audio playback. The unlaminated gatefold jacket is also graded Very Good (VG), presenting a clean appearance overall but exhibiting typical vintage shelf wear around the edges. The original printed inner sleeves remain tidy, displaying a small split on their side seams, with one insert showing a bottom seam split that has been neatly stabilised with tape. It is an incredibly individual, solid-playing item for any Beatles collector.
