Rock and roll was thought to have started in 1940's and 50's in America being a fusion of Afro American and rhythm and blues together with traditional country and folk and some Jazz from the 30's. It usually consist of a lead, rhythm and base guitar and drums.
It was popular in the early 50's with artists such as Bill Haley and his Comets hitting the Billboard charts. Other major artists emerged such as Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Fats Domino, Bo Diddley and Jerry Lee Lewis. The massive hit to cross the Atlantic to the UK was Rock Around the Clock by Bill Haley and his Comets. This song was a dance hall smash and the dance called rock and roll developed. Also the UK had a unique form of music called skiffle which was a slightly different take on rock and roll, but still contained the energy.
Later artists in the late 50's and early Sixties to be influence by rock and roll were Elvis Presley in the US and Cliff Richard in the UK. Also in the early to Mid 60's bands like The Beatles and Status Quo started by playing roll and roll with the genre developing into Rock Music, a vast genre.
Even modern day bands like Oasis show influences from rock and roll with hits like 'Roll With It'. The early exponents of rock and roll who made recordings on vinyl are extremely rare and command high prices by specialist collectors of this important genre.
