This genre is very much an American one which developed in the 1920's with folk music and cowboy music in the Southern States. In the UK it would be equivalent to our folk music. Country has influences from Europe and in particular Celtic. It became very popular with the advent of films, in particular Westerns with artists like Gene Autry and Roy Rogers. These movies introduced UK audiences to country music.
In the 50's and 60's major artists crossed over into mainstream popular music and started to feature heavily in the Billboard charts and also in the UK. Artists like Jim Reeves and Johnny Cash became stars both sides of the Atlantic. In the 70's through to the present day Dolly Parton became a household name and artists like Kenny Rogers, Willie Nelson, Patsy Cline and Emmylou Harris were very popular.
Today there are major festivals of country music throughout the USA and it is considered a major genre with early vinyl LP's being very collectable. Newer artists have emerged and had major hits.
